Woah. My grandpa gave me that advice when I was 20, and I listened. I learned Spanish, moved abroad, store my wealth in portable assets, and ended up gaining citizenship in the very unpopulated Australia. Unfortunately, Australia is the US' bitch, but it's way more humane and offers a better quality of life than in the US. AUS citizenship comes with permanent residency in New Zealand, so I don't think it's a bad deal. Also, I can't justify exposing offspring to this hell, so I decided to invest energy into my community instead. Ha. I took your advice twenty years ago - thanks!

The problem is I care about the US and my family is there. I wish I could stop caring, but I can't. Ugh.
