We don't learn about capitalism, communism, and socialism in public schools. High school students take an econ course, but it doesn't explain the difference in philosophies. Many Americans still confuse communism and socialism with fascism, and if we understood the most basic principles of economics we'd be way better off. It also doesn't help we're fed so much BS we believe austerity is a good thing, and there isn't enough money to fund public goods.
I studied econ at university, and we did not discuss alternative structures. Learning the various schools of thought expands our ability to think critically and problem solve, but we aren't taught how to think - we're taught how to listen.
I wish there was a course on political campaigns and running for office. No one has to care about politics, but politics impact everyone.
