We Don’t Have A Choice; Our Only Option is to Fight

Our future is climate catastrophe and financial enslavement, or we fight.

I think about people trying to keep warm and dry while sleeping on the streets. I wonder when they last felt safe, and their belly was full, but the thoughts pass as spontaneously as they arrive, and I focus on the present.

We fool ourselves into believing people choose to be poor because the truth is too painful and frightening, but we can’t escape our subconscious. The poverty and lack of security cause anxiety to manifest as angry, bitter resentment, and we impulsively lash out. We know life is more than endlessly pursuing a profit, and economic markets can’t deliver well-being, but we can’t change the system ourselves.

Society would never choose the pursuit of profits over satisfying human needs, but McCarthyism killed the labor movement, Reagan buried it, and capitalism won by default. We participate in the repressive system because our income is our lifeline, there isn’t an alternative, and the power dynamics sustain our dependency. We can’t quit our jobs to build a mass movement, and we endure the exploitation out of necessity, but we don’t accept it.

Capitalism doesn’t provide for more than half of the global population, and it never will. Businesses…
