Urban planners, city councils, local gov, etc. need to let community plan and direct whilst the assist with the logistics. Least in my opinion. There are away too many wasted, inefficient, and/or perverse outcomes when "experts" blindly follow their textbooks.
Many Melbournians take over the abandoned manufacturing warehouses to convert them to housing. Some of them squat whilst others paid minimal rent, and threw parties to raise money via entry. I have to say they were epic parties. Melbournians also cram as many housemates under one roof as possible. Couples renting rooms are the most sought after for house shares. Personally, I can't go back to share houses, but my rental property is affordable.
Have you seen how Australia has dispersed public housing? Apartments are scattered throughout cities in all suburbs, but recently they've decided to further increase the sprawl and provide housing in the outer suburbs. The area is isolated with minimal economic activities, and wouldn't you believe, there is an epic heroine issue. It's the only place in Australia I've felt a tad on edge because Australia has/had diversity in its suburbs, and I've always felt safe.
The "free-market" is why I was so heated in the article we first started commenting on. It infuriates me beyond belief because the government assists the "free-market" via whichever lobby group has been in their ear. Urgh.
Agree economics needs to be broken down as it has become way too broad. People have forgotten we are the economy because government's reference to the "economy" implies the markets.
