The way I see it is the West and Russia seek influence and economic control in Ukraine, and Ukrainians die for a war between two imperialists. I am American, but that doesn't mean I believe the US is the less bad imperialist. If we compare US foreign policy to any nation over the last 50 years, the US is the world's deadliest regime, and for the last 30 years, the US had total dominance over the world. We could have done so much, but we pursued wars, conflicts, climate change, etc.
Do you remember when Greece, Spain, and Italy mass protested the EU austerity measures? Ukraine faced the same crappy deal, and the president at the time refused to accept the terms. Russia took the opportunity to offer a better deal that didn't require an IMF loan, and if you don't know about the devastation the IMF causes in the Global South, check out Argentina's attitude toward the loans.
We won't have peace in a world that values profits more than lives, and seeking forever growth promotes endlessly expanding into new markets (countries). Capitalism produces imperialism, and the US government defends and kills to sustain a system that benefits less than 30% of the global population.
All these asshole imperialist governments are evil, and the global population endures the hell they create. They start wars and we do their fighting, but what do we get out of this - more wars! So, humiliating Russia or WWIII will do nothing but repeat the last 70 years. The US has over 700 military bases in 80 countries, yet no one feels safer. Perhaps threatening violence and flexing our guns provoke deadly conflicts, and it's time to start doing the hard work - ending competition, and developing and maintaining relationships globally.
