US democracy's descent accelerated in the 21st century when Americans democratically elected Al Gore, yet Republican operatives, staffers, and paid agitators stormed a Florida polling station to stop a lawful recount. The right-wing coup successfully handed George W. Bush the presidency and tyranny to the voters, and no one faced public hearings or prison sentences. Instead, the government praised the insurgents and rewarded them with roles at the White House.
Although US policies were already abysmal, the Brooks Brothers riot flushed democracy down the toilet, plunging the country into a sewer of bloody war crimes, the Patriot Act, and corporate greed. Bush's murderous rampage ensured enormous earnings for his fossil fuel and weapon-manufacturing junkie friends, securing climate change and deadly catastrophes. Gore may have followed a similar shitty path, but it's difficult to believe anyone could outdo Enron, the 20-year war in Afghanistan, and the Iraq invasion.
