The problem is both parties have continued the neoliberalist model since its introduction. The outsourcing of manufacturing jobs and deregulation of the financial system during the Clinton admin in the 90's sewed distrust. While the Democrats ignore the most impacted, the Republicans manipulate them by feigning empathy and labelling them victims, yet neither party does anything to stop the transfer of wealth.

There's also a lot of propaganda from corporations and the Red Scare tactics to scare Americans into believing socialism is the devil's work, remains prevalent within society. It's all so messed up.
