Same here, and I know I can't beat the psychological warfare, but at least I realized it exists.

It's not difficult to influence the public's opinion of Russia/USSR - it's been the 'bad guy' in movies and video games for decades. The emotions just had to be lightly stirred for an instant and irrational reaction.

Happy people don't promote wars, but Americans are so miserable and angry that they advocate for conflicts as an outlet for their discontent. We have to blame someone for our shitty, pointless lives, and accusing the obvious culprit is too big of a head f*ck to take on.
