Norfolk Southern gave residents roughly $1000 to cover the inconvenience. It's so goddamn disgusting. They don't give a shit about anything but profits, and the government helps them achieve it.

The railways should be publicly owned, not a monopoly-owned, profit-driven business, and the government's punishment for cutting corners should be nationalization. Derailments would dramatically decrease and safety would increase if the greedy owners feared repercussions.
