Perhaps Israel's excessive use of force attempts to restore its military's reputation, and I agree with your theory about Iran. Israel is either provoking a conflict that will force the US to react, or the US is encouraging Israel to instigate a war that no one in the region wants.

Iran threatens to intervene yet hasn't followed through, displaying its disinterest in a conflict. Undoubtedly, Iran would have fired missiles by now if war was the objective.
