I'm not going to claim I know the answers to this madness, but wanted to add my opinion. The Republican voters are a minority and they are easily manipulated by fear, whilst the Democrats vote for the "feel good" politicians who really don't do very much for the people. Although Trump is a egomaniac, many people believe he hears them, and he does reach out to a large group of the disenfranchised (in some kind of bizarre way).

I was looking at the geographical areas voting for Trump and wondered how often the democrats have bothered to reach out to them. Most of these areas are low-income, rural, and their local newspaper is the main source of information. B. Clinton deregulating the FCC helped set the stage for Fox and the lack of quality control on journalism. I'd bet my pitiful life savings most people voting for Trump haven't heard a negative story about him.

Obama offered change and we all wanted change. Trump embodies this in some kind of way, yet neither one of them did much to reduce wealth inequalities but it's quite clear we want change. A study in 2017 asking Americans if they believe the country is better off than 50 years shows the majority believe it's worse off. Sooo that's not great.
