I agree, China isn't a military threat because it's not a warring country. It spends less than 2% of GDP on the military and doesn't get politically involved in global affairs.

While the US normalizes war, 21st century nations resort to conflicts when threatened, and as you mention, US military bases are everywhere. Maybe the fearmongering headlines are the government's method of motivating Americans for war.
