Hi again! Ha. I'm an American living in Australia and there is affordable housing, but you'd have to commute for employment. Housing is affordable in less active economic markets/cities. I could buy a home in parts of the US or Australia, but where would I work?

However, ya. The housing markets are insanely manipulated and it's ridiculous they are used to gain wealth in the US and Australia.
