Escapism isn't Imagination, and We're Lonely Because We Forgot How to Imagine Collectively
There's nothing to believe in or live for because we don't have a shared vision of the future, and we're trapped in a miserable existence.
A child in the park covered her eyes to hide, believing if she couldn't see her parents, they couldn't see her, and I wished it was that easy to disappear. Adults consume mind-altering substances, live in nostalgia, or believe unbelievable truths to detach from reality, and some never reconnect. Drugs, including alcohol, numb our minds as we recite stories that transport us to a moment when our dreams are still alive, and no one wants to let go of the bottles, pills, or delusions that bring life to the dead.
Escapism is a slippery slope when sobriety and consciousness are miserable, and current circumstances exceed our worst nightmares. It's unbearable to exist and won't improve because there aren't collectively held visions to create movement toward something better together. We've been on a steady decline for decades with nowhere to go but down, and our descent is accelerating. Still, it doesn't occur to us that our collective yet alienated decline could be a collaborative rise.
