Deregulation caused extreme inequality, and historically, this leads to fascism. Capitalism benefitted some, but it isn't perfect. For capitalism to provide for the majority, government regulation and wealth distribution are essential, but our governments failed us, and wealth disparities will lead to civil unrest.
It's difficult to determine capitalism from fascism because capitalists often become fascists. Centralized wealth centralized power. The US government controls the economic markets (corporate bailouts, etc.), and during the Red Scare, the US deported and imprisoned anyone critizing capitalism. Unfortunately, things haven't changed much since the pro-capitalism propaganda. Right now, a human rights lawyer is in jail for challenging Chevron.
Capitalism is a political, social, economic philosophy. It influences us mentally and physically, but people tend to overlook its entire impact on society.
