Californians pretend slavery didn't exist in the state, but it did.

Wealthy plantation owners claimed the US economy would collapse if slavery was abolished, but the country, capitalism, and the rich survived. Although workers weren't paid much, it was a significant economic transformation, yet GDP and living standards rose.

Perhaps home-owners who worry about property appreciation more than people would benefit from poverty reduction. 🤷🏼‍♀️
