Bob, I wish the world was the way you see it, but it's not that simple. Applying for government aid is incredibly difficult, and it takes months to receive support, but I appreciate your consideration.
My grandparents endured the great depression, but FDR's New Deal provided social benefits like Social Security, affordable housing, etc. When my Italian immigrant grandpa who did not have a university degree, retired, he did not worry about money because there were more benefits for workers than today.
Our government began dissolving the New Deal in the 1970s, and Reagan reformed the economy, implementing deregulation, privatization, austerity, and anti-union policies. Every president since Reagan has maintained the pro-business, trickle-down economic structure.
The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer because of stagnant wages, increased prices, outsourced labor, and sick, vacation, and maternity paid-leave is optional.
Unfortunately, your assumptions aren't correct, and US life expectancy recently declined.
I am fortunate. I enjoy my job, and my boyfriend/de facto husband earns a decent wage, but there is unnecessary suffering everywhere. Our economic system is a scam that exploits and abuses workers, and our government facilitates it.
My solidarity lies with the public, not our government.
Oxfam's full report is available here, and here's a paragraph from the link:
At the same time, at least 1.7 billion workers now live in countries where inflation is outpacing wages, and over 820 million people —roughly one in ten people on Earth— are going hungry. Women and girls often eat least and last, and make up nearly 60 percent of the world’s hungry population. The World Bank says we are likely seeing the biggest increase in global inequality and poverty since WW2.
